April 26, 2026, marks 40 years since the accident at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. It stands as the largest man-made disaster in the history of nuclear energy, claiming thousands of lives and causing irreparable damage not only to the ecology of Ukraine but to all of Europe.
In December 2016, the UN General Assembly proclaimed April 26 as the International Chornobyl Disaster Remembrance Day and the International Day of Remembrance for Victims of Radiation Accidents and Catastrophes. On this date, we honor all those who perished or suffered because of it, as well as the liquidators of the accident's consequences. Unfortunately, the topic of radiation safety remains painful and topical for us today, as there are nuclear facilities on the territory of Ukraine that pose a potential threat of new horrific catastrophes due to the Russian-Ukrainian war.
Chornobyl is not only a historical event but an eternal lesson for humanity about responsibility, courage, and the price of mistakes.
To mark this somber date, the Lending Department of Educational Literature at the STU Scientific Library (Room 372, Building C) has organized a thematic book exhibition «Chornobyl: A Memory That Never Fades», featuring documentary materials, journalistic essays, and works of fiction.
