This year marks the 100th anniversary of the assassination of Simon Petliura, the Head of the Directorate of the Ukrainian People's Republic (UNR) and the Supreme Commander of the UNR Army and Navy.
Simon Petliura is one of those leaders of the Ukrainian Revolution and the Ukrainian political movement of the first quarter of the 20th century whose contribution Ukraine has not yet fully appreciated.
To honor the memory of Simon Petliura and to properly recognize and popularize his contribution to the creation of the Ukrainian state, culture, and military, the Scientific Library of the State Tax University has organized a thematic exhibition titled «Simon Petliura: A Life for Independence». The exhibited publications highlight the figure of Simon Petliura – a man who became a symbol of the struggle for Ukrainian statehood and independence. Even during his lifetime, Petliura was a target of Russian imperial propaganda. After his death, this propaganda only intensified, producing myths, stereotypes, and attempts at discredit that continue to exist in various forms today.
The core idea of the exhibition is not only to tell the story of Simon Petliura but also to restore his figure to a honest historical context. It helps to understand the complex circumstances under which political decisions were made, how the struggle for Ukrainian statehood was shaped, and why the memory of Petliura remains vital for modern Ukraine.
