Faculty staff of the Department of Higher and Applied Mathematics at the State Tax University, Oksana Yarova and Daria Termenzhy, participated in the international online event “Building Future Leaders in Statistics and Data Science: Japan’s Collaborative Model from School Education to Society.”
The event was held as part of the International Day of Women in Statistics and Data Science (IDWSDS 2026) conference and focused on Japan’s experience in advancing statistical education and data science, fostering data literacy, and ensuring continuity between school education, higher education, and professional practice.
The session featured distinguished Japanese experts in statistics, mathematics, and education: Shigeru Kawasaki, President of the Japan Statistical Association; Kiwa Tomaru, a Mathematics teacher at Nagoya University Junior and Senior High School, who develops and teaches a compulsory Data Science course; and Yoko Konishi, Professor at the University of Tsukuba, specializing in applied econometrics and statistics. The session was moderated by Yutaka Kano, Professor at Doshisha University.
Of particular interest to the faculty members was the Japanese experience in integrating statistics and data science into educational curricula, especially approaches aimed at developing students’ ability to accurately read, analyze, and interpret data rather than merely apply predefined formulas.
Participation in such international events contributes to the professional development of the Department’s academic staff, provides valuable insights into current global trends in mathematics and statistics education, facilitates the exchange of innovative teaching practices, and encourages the exploration of new approaches to improving the teaching of higher and applied mathematics, statistics, and data analysis-related disciplines.
The knowledge and insights gained from this event will contribute to the further enhancement of course content and the integration of modern educational practices into the teaching and learning process at the State Tax University.
