The Department of Foreign Languages held an international guest lecture dedicated to how contemporary Europe perceives Ukraine within political and media discourses. The speaker was Winfried Schneider-Deters, a German economist, publicist, and renowned expert on Ukrainian affairs, with many years of experience at the Friedrich Ebert Foundation (FES). He presented his publications focused on the events of the war in Ukraine and European geopolitics.
During the lecture, he analyzed key trends in the coverage of Ukrainian events in European media, outlined the dominant political narratives and approaches to interpreting the Russian-Ukrainian war, and shared his personal experience of cooperation with Ukrainian institutions.
A particularly valuable aspect of the event was that students had the opportunity to listen to the lecturer as a native speaker, which allowed them to improve their foreign language proficiency, expand their vocabulary, and immerse themselves in an authentic linguistic environment. This interaction provided important practical experience and contributed to the development of intercultural communication skills.
The event served as a platform for a professional discussion on current European approaches to understanding Ukraine and deepened students’ interest in contemporary political processes and international media narratives.
